Activities & Experiences

  • Beaches

Comporta is surrounded by long Atlantic beaches backed by dunes and pine forest. Praia da Comporta is the most convenient from the village, while Praia do Carvalhal and Praia do Pego offer equally beautiful alternatives farther south. Each has its own character, with seasonal beach restaurants and facilities. Conditions can be lively in the Atlantic, so always observe local flags and lifeguard advice.

  • Rice-Field Walks & Cycling

Explore Comporta’s distinctive landscape on foot or by bicycle, following quiet tracks between rice fields, pine forest and coastal dunes. The flat terrain makes gentle rides particularly enjoyable, although some tracks can be sandy or uneven. Comporta Electric Bikes organises guided e-bike tours through the rice fields, while independent visitors can plan shorter routes around the village and towards nearby Carrasqueira.

  • Horse Riding

See Comporta’s rice fields, forests and dunes from horseback with a guided ride through the surrounding countryside. Cavalos na Areia, based near Torre in Comporta, offers organised riding experiences and lessons for different ability levels. Routes and access to particular landscapes can vary with the season and local conditions, so booking directly with the operator in advance is recommended.

  • Wine Tasting

Discover wines produced within the Comporta landscape at the Herdade da Comporta winery. Pre-booked visits can include an introduction to the estate’s winemaking process, a tasting of white, rosé and red wines, and regional accompaniments. Joint visits combining the winery with the nearby Rice Museum may also be available. Advance reservation is recommended, particularly during busy periods or the grape harvest.

  • Golf

Golf is becoming one of Comporta’s major attractions. The closest course is Torre Golf Course at Terras da Comporta, about 10 km from the house and named the World’s Best New Golf Course at the 2025 World Golf Awards. The 18-hole, par-72 course, designed by Sergio García, opened in 2025. About five minutes farther on is the acclaimed Dunas Golf Course, also at Terras da Comporta. Across the Sado, Tróia Golf is a classic Robert Trent Jones Sr. design running along the northern tip of the peninsula. Advance tee-time booking is recommended; Terras da Comporta has full details.

  • Birdwatching

Comporta lies beside the Sado Estuary Natural Reserve, where rice paddies, marshes, reed beds and sandbanks support a rich variety of birdlife. Explore quietly around the rice fields and Carrasqueira, or arrange a guided nature or boat excursion for a broader view of the estuary. Sightings vary by season, but the area is recognised as one of Portugal’s important birdwatching environments.

  • Food, Shopping & Nightlife

Comporta village combines relaxed local character with restaurants, cafés, independent boutiques and design-led shops. Fresh fish, seafood, rice dishes and regional wines feature prominently, while the nearby beaches offer seasonal restaurants for long lunches and sunset drinks. Evenings are generally relaxed rather than club-focused, though some restaurants and venues become livelier during summer. Opening days and hours vary considerably by season, so check before making a special journey.

  • Nearby Towns

There is plenty to explore beyond Comporta. Visit Carrasqueira for its distinctive wooden stilt pier, Tróia for beaches and Roman ruins, or riverside Alcácer do Sal for its historic streets and hilltop castle. Setúbal lies across the Sado by ferry and offers markets, seafood and access to Arrábida. These destinations suit anything from a brief scenic outing to a full-day excursion, depending on traffic and ferry arrangements.

  • Sand Dune Buggy Rides

For something a little more adventurous guided buggy tours offer a chance to explore the sandy tracks running alongside the rice fields, pine forests and coastal landscapes around Comporta. The excursions combine off-road driving with spectacular scenery and are a fun way to see a different side of the region. Several local operators offer guided trips, with different durations and routes available.
